FBI agents sent to arrest Maryland judge for child sex crimes find him dead by suicide
(The AEGIS Alliance) – A judge in Maryland who committed suicide this past week was discovered by FBI agents that had come to apprehend him for child sex abuse crimes.
On Friday, FBI agents discovered Jonathan Newell, aged 50, “suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.” Newell was then pronounced dead at 6:43 a.m., according to the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The Caroline County Circuit Judge had been implicated in covertly videotaping kids while they used a restroom inside his fishing cabin.
Criminal documents unsealed recently pointed out that when police asked Newell questions at his log cabin in July, he purportedly ate a flash memory card he took out of an electronic camera he made use of in the alleged video recordings.
A health care record mentioned in the complaint takes note that at a neighboring medical center the following day, CT scans affirmed Newell did indeed swallow the memory card.
A past public defender, Newell worked as Caroline County’s leading prosecutor for over ten years, in which he ” concentrated on felony drug, sex offense and child abuse cases, plus a number of murder cases.”
Newell came to be a judge in 2016 and occasionally hosted underage visitors at his log cabin.
Authorities talked with 9 teenagers that had gone to the log cabin or the judge’s house, or both.
The day prior to him being discovered dead, Newell was charged with one count of sex-related exploitation of a kid.
