Two Oklahoma men sentenced to prison for wrapping sleeping inmate in toilet paper then setting him on fire

A pair of Tulsa residents in Oklahoma have been sentenced to federal prison for a horrific act on a fellow inmate in December 2022.

Judge Frizzell sentenced the duo to serve 60 months behind bars, then one year of supervised release.

Prosecutors allege Gering and Tavis, while incarcerated at the Ottawa County Jail, were captured on video surveillance “dousing a sleeping inmate with toilet paper and igniting it.”

Thankfully, the victim was shielded by a fire-resistant blanket issued by the jail, preventing severe burns.

The U.S. Attorney’s office credits other inmates with intervening to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from escalating within the jail. Gering and Tavis will be held in custody until transfer and official booking by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
