Grandma thought she was texting Robert De Niro, but her granddaughter knew it was a scam, ‘I couldn’t stop laughing’

A tech-savvy granddaughter prevented her grandma from falling victim to an online imposter. The scammer, posing as legendary actor Robert De Niro, targeted Gina Morgan, a 76-year-old from South Wales.

Morgan engaged in a lengthy conversation on Facebook with the phony “Godfather” (reported by Caters News). Red carpet photos and a username like “Robert De Niro page” didn’t faze her, nor did the scammer’s attempt to sell her exclusive “membership cards” – a tactic reminiscent of a scheme Jimmy Conway might pull from “Goodfellows.”

“That’s not Robert De Niro!” Shannon Rich, Morgan’s 28-year-old granddaughter, exclaims in a video showcasing the messages.

“Well, who is it?” Morgan replies, playfully humoring the situation.

The scam aimed to swindle the senior citizen out of $500 for a phony “VIP fan card” promising exclusive access to De Niro – video chats, phone calls, and even a personal visit, Caters reported. Messages offered her a choice of “three types of membership cards,” with the scammer promising to “connect” her to their “manager” to secure one.

While Rich ultimately intervened, she believes her grandma would have caught on before any real damage was done. Morgan’s skepticism about the tuxedo-clad “De Niro” photos hints at her underlying shrewdness.

“Some people online were concerned about her, but my nan is smart enough not to give out any personal details,” Shannon Rich cautioned. “Nan was showing me the messages on Facebook from a fake Robert De Niro profile, and I couldn’t stop laughing.

This incident serves as a reminder of the growing threat of online scams, particularly those targeting the elderly. With the rise of sophisticated technology, vigilance is crucial to protect vulnerable populations from these cunning schemes.
