Special Ed Teacher Charged for Molesting Girl at Rhode Island Camp
(The AEGIS Alliance) – DANIELSON, RHODE ISLAND – A special education teacher in Rhode Island is facing charges after sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl while at a Killingly camping trip in 2018, according to state police and NorwichBulletin.com.
29-year-old Nicholas Oliveira who lives at 28 Cormier Road in Lincoln, Rhode Island was criminally charged on Saturday with first-degree sexual assault and two counts related to the risk of injury to a minor that involves sexual contact with a person under the age of 13, NorwichBulletin.com reports.
The alleged victim’s mother contacted authorities after her daughter told her that Mr. Oliveira touched her chest and was looking at her “inappropriate parts” while they were at the Hideaway Cove Campground around July 21, 2018.
The girl recalled sharing a tent with another minor child when Mr. Oliveira woke her up in the middle of the night with his “cold hands touching her on her breasts and vagina,” followed by digitally penetrating her, according to the arrest warrant affidavit and NorwichBulletin.com.
Mr. Oliveira then started moving onto the other juvenile female in the tent, but the girl was unable to see what occurred. Oliveira allegedly sexually assaulted her again, then he went to sleep, according to the girl and the warrant, NorwichBulletin.com wrote.
The warrant described Nicholas Oliveria as a special education teacher for the Ashton School located in Cumberland, Rhode Island.
On July 12, 2019, employees of the John Calcagni law firm based in Providence informed detectives they were now representing Oliveria and made the request that police should only contact their client through his lawyer. The suspect’s lawyer said later that his client won’t talk to authorities about the accusations against him.
Detectives investigating the case with the Eastern Major Crime Squad talked to counterparts at the Lincoln, Rhode Island Police Department who told them there were other sexual assault allegations against Mr. Oliveira that involved underage females, according to police. Lincoln, R.I. police had charged Oliveira with second-degree child molestation in September of 2019.
Police with the Cumberland, R.I., police department later said they also had active investigations into Oliveira that involved underage persons.
NorwichBulletin.com says Nicholas Oliveira turned himself in-to police custody at the Troop D Barracks in Danielson and was able to post his bond amount of $100,000. Oliveira is due to appear at the Danielson Superior Court on February 18.
