Climate activist Greta Thunberg detained by Norway police during pro-Sami protest

(The AEGIS Alliance) – On Wednesday, Norwegian police briefly apprehended environmentally conscious activist Greta Thunberg during a rally in Oslo. She was part of a crowd of protesters who were demanding the evacuation of wind turbines from Sami Indigenous land in the central area of Norway. Thunberg was carrying a Sami flag with the colors red, blue, yellow, and green.

The Supreme Court of Norway determined in 2021 that two wind farms at Fosen infringed upon the indigenous people’s rights and freedoms under international law; however, the turbines are still running more than 16 months later. Thunberg and other activists were eventually set free after the scuffle.

Supporters of the movement asserted that a conversion to renewable energy must not take away from the Sami’s liberty. Reindeer herders argued that the sight and sound of the machinery terrify their animals, as well as disrupt their ancient practices.

The energy department mentioned that the wind turbines are a legal dilemma in spite of the Supreme Court’s decision. They intend to come up with a resolution, but it could take another year to make a new verdict in the Fosen case.

The campaigners raised nearly $100,000 in the last few days to assist with fines for the participants.
