Pennsylvania father, his girlfriend allegedly shackled 12-year-old to furniture and starved her to death

A Pennsylvania couple stands accused of horrific abuse leading to the death of a 12-year-old girl. Rendell Hoagland, 52, and his girlfriend, Cindy Warren, 45, face a multitude of charges after authorities responded to a call on May 4th regarding their unresponsive daughter, Malinda.

The tragedy unfolded on Reid Road in West Caln Township. According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, Hoagland contacted authorities claiming Malinda was unresponsive. Emergency personnel rushed her to the Paoli Hospital Trauma Center, where medical staff discovered the severity of her condition.

Malinda, tragically, succumbed to her injuries later that night. Prosecutors revealed a disturbing picture: the young girl weighed a mere 50 pounds, bore extensive bruising, had fractured bones, and her organs were failing.

Investigators uncovered a pattern of mistreatment. Malinda was reportedly withdrawn from public school in late 2023 and switched to at-home online learning. Cell phone evidence suggested Warren attempted to conceal potential wrongdoing by deleting messages exchanged with Hoagland. Additionally, home camera footage showed Malinda shackled by the ankle.

The alleged abuse included both verbal torment and severe physical punishment. Prosecutors claim Hoagland and Warren forced Malinda to perform strenuous exercises as a form of discipline, even while shackled. Furthermore, they allege the couple withheld food from her. This horrifying mistreatment, according to the district attorney’s office, spanned several months.

Thankfully, a young life wasn’t further jeopardized. While residing in the same house, Warren’s 9-year-old son escaped unharmed, WCAU reported..

Hoagland and Warren were apprehended on May 6th. They face charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. Their bail is set at $1 million, and further charges, potentially including murder, may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe expressed his outrage: “Malinda was subjected to evil and torment that no child should ever have to endure. I am grateful to every first responder and law enforcement officer who has worked tirelessly on this case. Together we will get justice for Malinda.”
